‘It’s scary’: Record number of DMPS students are homeless

The family story told here could be told more than 1,070 times in Des Moines, none exactly the same but all with one common denominator, a family with nowhere to live.

That number, 1,070 is likely even higher out of the more than 30,000 students in DMPS.

“That’s only scratching the surface,” said Lyn Marchant, DMPS homeless liaison coordinator and community school coordinator. “There are so many people that we don’t know about because they don’t want to say, or they don’t want to put themselves on the radar.”
