Trauma Webinar Drives a Record Number of Registrants

Culture of Health Series

According to a study in Helping Traumatized Children Learn: A Report and Policy Agenda, nearly every school has children who have been exposed to overwhelming experiences, such as witnessing violence between their caretakers, being the direct targets of abuse and other kinds of adversity. Exposure to violence and trauma is also linked to how long you will live. This is why the Coalition for Community Schools at the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) is dedicated to educating school administrators about the importance of addressing trauma in schools through webinars and resources.

In late March over 400 people participated in IEL’s webinar on Family & Community Engagement - Addressing Childhood Trauma.  During the webinar, CSSP’s Cailin O’Connor offered a framework for addressing trauma and toxic stress. She highlighted the importance of shifting the conversation from focusing on isolated, individual incidents to recognizing that many children are experiencing community-wide trauma. This requires a look at root causes and efforts to boost protective factors in families and communities. Examples supporting this approach were provided by speakers from; Boston Public SchoolsMother’s for Justice and Equality, and the National Parent Leadership Institute.

View recording and download slides from the webinar and learn how to begin implementing a framework to address trauma.
