Summer Learning Helps Close Achievement Gap

09/20/11

A Learning First Alliance article "Summer Learning Programs: Worthy of Attention and Resources" highlights the importance of summer learning programs. These programs have proven to be essential in helping close the achievement gap. An article from Johns Hopkins, "Lasting Consequences of the Summer Learning Gap," notes "two thirds of the achievement gap for low-income students entering ninth grade can be attributed to summer learning loss."

When students return to school, many are over a month behind in the learning process due to extended time away from learning. The National Association of State Boards of Education, a Coalition partner, recently hosted a webinar highlighting six different summer based learning solutions. The programs run from mandatory, voluntary, and home-based which include a literacy based system that will help enhance the academic learning process.  The National Summer Learning Association, also a Coalition partner,  provides resources, guidance and expertise to the summer learning community.

Public school systems across the nation are often held responsible for the achievement gap. Summer learning programs serve as opportunities for students to heighten their academic placement in their school, prepare them for the fall school year, and boost student morale and possibility upon entering ninth grade. These programs can provide academically stimulating environments for youth throughout the year. Although there are variations of these programs based on need, they are important to recognize as a strong addition to our communities and our schools.
