Showdown: House to Vote on ‘Community Schools’ that Conflict with Texas Values

On May 13th, Texas Senate and House Representatives were scheduled to vote on House Bill 1891, known as “Relating to Texas Community Schools.” Under this bill, public schools would combine academic, health, and social services to turn schools into the “hub” of the community. The schools would partner with a community-based organization to help support the students, families, schools, and communities. If two-thirds of the House and Senate agree to pass this bill, it will take effect immediately. Read More >

COALITION BLOG: ESEA Bill Approved Out of Senate Committee, With Key Community Schools Wins

In a remarkable act of bipartisanship, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee unanimously approved its ESEA bill, the Every Child Achieves Act, out of committee on April 16. Through the stewardship of Chairman Alexander (R-TN) and Ranking Member Murray (D-WA), the committee worked through over 50 amendments across three days and reached a consensus to move the bill forward. Georgia Democrats Offer Counter to Deal’s School Takeover Plan

Georgia “Senate Democratic leaders countered Gov. Nathan Deal’s school takeover proposal with their own plan to transform dysfunctional classrooms into “community schools…” The governor, according to the article, is willing to consider the new proposal as an addition to his bill. Senate Education Committee Discusses the Unmet Needs of Struggling Students

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions discussed the importance of teacher quality and school leadership at its second hearing on the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Testimonies came from a teacher, both a district and state superintendent, as well as an educational researcher. West Virginia Board of Education Approves Community Schools Plan For McDowell County Public Schools

The West Virginia Board of Education today unanimously approved a community schools plan for the McDowell County Public Schools, marking one of Reconnecting McDowell’s most significant efforts thus far to improve the education, health and well-being of the county’s students and their families.
