Culture of Health Series

Paterson School District is providing individual and group counseling services to almost three dozen Syrian refugee students thanks to partnerships with service providers that work in the districts full-service community schools and 21st community learning centers.

The counseling services provided by these partnerships will primarily focus on helping students who experienced trauma from witnessing the Syrian Civil War.

Khader "Ken" Abuassab, President of Arab American Civic Organization, praised Paterson Public Schools for going above and beyond to assist students and parents. Abuassab knows first-hand because he currently partners with the school to help support students’ parents with English language classes on Saturdays.

Paterson has a long history of welcoming immigrants. More than a dozen families from Syria settled in Paterson in 2016. School 9 utilizes the hyper-local element of the community schools strategy to respond to the unique needs of its community and is creatively bringing together all of the community’s assets to support public education.
