One School's Story of Success, and a Setback
Minneapolis Star-Tribune education reporter Daarel Burnette II takes an honest examination of the progress, setback, and rebound of Dayton Bluff Elementary, a community school in rough, St. Paul.
After years of tremendous support from its partners, Dayton Bluff not only narrowed the Achievement Gap but it erased it. Minority students were outperforming Caucasian students on standardized tests by 2010. Scores took a nose dive in 2011 after change in school leadership and further decline in the local economy.
The story provides a lesson in the persistent challenges of educating disadvantaged students and the collaborative effort it will take to sustain success.
