Ogden Aims High With Community Schools

The United Way of Northern Utah , along with The Ogden School District and a group of agencies in the Ogden, UT are working together to help students achieve success. The Ogden School District is already doing this by implementing the community school strategy but now they want to create more community schools. Director of United Way of Northern Utah Robert Hunter says "The idea is to increase involvement between the schools and the communities they serve and boost parental involvement."

Community engagement and outside intervention is a key concept in the plan. This is already taking place in their existing community schools. For example, a community church has organized 30 to 40 reading volunteers. Hunter says "The whole notion is to bring kids up to third-grade level by third grade; statistics show if we bring them up to third-grade level by third grade, they do so much better later on".

The group plans to eventually turn all schools in the district into community schools.
