Community Schools in Oklahoma Linked to Closing Economic Education Gap


Union Public Schools and Tulsa Public Schools, which combined have a total of 18 community schools, were recently featured on the city’s local News On 6 station, because of a new study by the Oklahoma Center for Educational Policy. The study reveals "that fully-implemented community schools are closing the achievement gap between low-income students and their wealthier peers".

It showed that "low income students at community schools in the study outscored low-income students in other schools by more than 30 points". The article features Roy Clark in Union Public Schools, an elementary school where not only are children learning and being engaged, but the school is also engaging parents and making them a partner in their child’s education. At Roy Clark, as in many other community schools, the vision is going beyond the classroom to take care of the whole child, by meeting their academic, social and physical needs.

More than nine thousand students and their families are impacted by the eighteen Tulsa Area Community Schools Initiative (TACSI) Title I elementary schools in low income neighborhoods throughout the Tulsa area.
