Prince Georges County Public Schools Board Approves Community School Policy with Leadership from Board Member and Coalition Policy Director Mary Kingston Roche

Prince George’s County, MD, one of the 25 largest school districts in the country, on June 7 approved a policy promoting community schools for its 130,000 student school-system. The policy is a culmination of a collaborative effort among Board members, the teacher union, community members, and the administration.
The policy states that community schools "shall serve as an effective educational and holistic strategy to address both concentrated poverty and remove barriers to academic success, and to achieve equitable outcomes for all students." The policy defines a community school, puts in place the structures and functions of a coordinator, assets and needs assessment, school-based team, district-level community school director, and county-level Community School Steering Committee to oversee and support the initiative.

The policy also puts in place an application process for community schools, and enables any PGCPS school interested in becoming a community school to participate in relevant professional development. The Board’s FY 2019 budget, which will be voted on soon, includes pilot funding for community schools for the 2018-2019 school year.
