New IUPUI Center to Support University-Community School Partnerships

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is establishing the Center for University-Assisted Community Schools thanks to a funding award from the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Netter Center award is part of an effort by the organization to replicate the community school model around the country as community schools continue to prove to be an effective tool to reform and improve education and civic engagement.

IUPUI and its Center for Service and Learning has been nationally-recognized and highly-decorated for its work in supporting community schools in Indianapolis, most notably with George Washington Community High School – the inaugural winner of the Coalition for Community Schools National Community School Award in 2006.

IUPUI’s new regional Center for University-Assisted Community Schools will use the experience of its leaders and their nearly two decades of experience spearheading school-community partnerships to help other college/university-supported community schools in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Kentucky.  Oklahoma University-Tulsa Community Engagement Center was the first university-based training center to be funded by the Netter Center award.
