New Book Examines Impact of School-Based Health Care

The American Public Health Association, released a pivotal new book this month. School-Based Health Care: Advancing Educational Success and Public Health is one of the first book in 20 years, according to its publishers, to examine the practice, policy, and applied research of the outcomes and impacts of school-based health care.
According to the book’s editors, research has shown that substandard health care affects a student’s ability to learn, especially for students living with poverty. Contributors to this book, which include policy advocates, practitioners, and researchers, share experiences and strategies for advancing school-based health care. Among their strategies are how to build strategic partnerships and also includes an entire chapter on the synergy between community schools and school-based health centers. Their recommendations aim to improve access to comprehensive health care and services as well as improve educational and health equity.
The book also maps out a national policy initiative that will help advocates improve local, state, and national policies.
