Youth Engagement in Community Schools: Promising Practices from the National Beacons Initiative

February 24, 2011

The Beacons are a community school model that spans four cities and serves over 200,000 youth and adults annually. The strong emphasis on youth engagement as key for youth and community development is the foundation for many common, national strategies. Such strategies include youth leadership and employment programs, intergenerational and inter-cultural community building and social group work. This webinar will focus on the ways in which youth are engaged as partners with adults in Beacons to improve themselves, programs and communities. Intermediaries, direct service staff and young people from Beacon initiatives in New York City, Minneapolis and San Francisco will share promising practices derived from their work.

Our speakers highlight strategies used by San Francisco’s OMI/Excelsior Beacon staff, young people and community members who have developed a first responder team to prevent tensions between youth groups in the neighborhood from erupting into larger problems. Speakers from Minneapolis Beacons Initiative share their approach to adult-youth partnerships from the site level to the initiative level.
