Register Today: 2014 Community Schools National Forum  


The 2014 National Forum – Community Schools: The Engine of Opportunity is around the corner. We hope you’ll join us in Cincinnati, April 9-11 for three days filled with networking, learning, and excitement. Register by December 31st to receive Forum pricing from 2012. Below you can find the Who, What, Where, When, and Why of the Forum. We’ll see you there!

Who: Join 1500-2000 of your closest friends from around the country who believe that every child deserves every chance. Teachers, students, principals, community partners, policy makers, superintendents, parents, community organizers, non- and for-profit leaders, government officials, and others will be in attendance, will you?

What: This National Forum reflects the Coalition's commitment to equal opportunity for all students – that community schools, with their deep and sustained partnerships between schools and community resources, are the "engine" that will prepare our young people to succeed. Join us for 5 plenary sessions, over 125 workshop sessions, pre-conference institutes, and site visits that will help you, whether you are just learning about community schools to a fully scaled up initiative, figure out how community schools improve student success and revitalize neighborhoods.

Where: Cincinnati, OH - Duke Energy Convention Center. Remember there are a few ways to get into Cincinnati. If you are flying in, the closest airport is Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) but Dayton International Airport (DAY) provides another alternative approx. 55 miles away. And if you’re coming from the area, don’t forget to explore sharing a bus. If you need help figuring out who else may be coming from your region, reach out to Heather Naviasky.

Coalition Sends Letter Signed by 47 Organizations to Capitol Hill Urging ESEA Reauthorization (Coalition for Community Schools)
On December 2, 47 national, state and local organizations sent a letter to the Senate leadership urging them to expedite the reauthorization process of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). 

Massachusetts State-wide School-Community Partnerships Meeting a Huge Success (Coalition for Community Schools) 
More than 250 educators, community partners, higher education staff, and others from across Massachusetts gathered on November 21 for a full-day statewide event focused on growing and deepening school-community partnerships. The event was titled "Real Partnerships, Real Change: Improving Student Outcomes Through School-Community Partnerships.

NEW RESOURCE! The Growing Convergence of Community Schools and Expanded Learning Opportunities (Coalition for Community Schools) The Coalition for Community Schools' recent report, The Growing Convergence of Community Schools and Expanded Learning Opportunities, captures the scope and nature of expanded learning opportunities in community school partnerships. The report includes a new ELO typology and state-of-the-art ELO practices that community schools are implementing.

NEW RESOURCE! Accountable for Attendance (Children Now and Attendance Works)
Children Now and Attendance Works have co-published a new brief recommending county boards of education, school districts and community partners take action now to gather data, ask why, build capacity, engage stakeholders, and set targets to ensure their local control accountability plans address chronic absence.

NEW RESOURCE! Afterschool Alliance Releases Issue Brief on Computing and Engineering in Afterschool Programs (Afterschool Alliance)
This week the Afterschool Alliance released an issue brief on "Computing and Engineering in Afterschool".  As you may recall, this was one of the themes for our Afterschool STEM Impact Awards competition that we conducted over the summer.  The issue brief explores how afterschool programs are offering innovative hands-on computing and engineering education opportunities.  It also highlights a winner of the Afterschool STEM Impact Award, Project GUTS in Santa Fe NM and a few other exemplary programs. NEA: The Big Read 
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts to restore reading to the center of American culture by providing citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. The initiative includes innovative reading programs in selected cities and towns, comprehensive resources for discussing classic literature, and an extensive website providing comprehensive information on authors and their works. Maximum award: varies. Eligibility: literary organizations, libraries, and community organizations across the country. Deadline: January 28, 2014.

Captain Planet Foundation: Grants for the Environment 

The Captain Planet Foundation funds hands-on environmental projects to encourage youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their neighborhoods and communities. Maximum award: $2,500. Eligibility: 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, including schools, with an annual operating budget of less than $3 million. Deadline: January 31, 2013.
