Why I Love Working in a Community School: A Family Doctor Perspective

One day a week, I work as a doctor at a health clinic based in a community school in Brooklyn Center (Minnesota).

In this community, one of the biggest barriers to health care is lack of insurance. We have a lot of kids who are uninsured. Even if families have insurance, getting to a clinic can be difficult.

I work at a school that has figured out a way to help families get around these barriers and get the care that they need. Brooklyn Center does this by locating a health clinic right on the school campus. At this health clinic, there are many health care supports: I am here once a week (and another doctor is here once a week as well), a dentist is here, mental health counselors are here, and so are staff who specialize in helping families apply for for affordable health insurance. What this means is that when I see a child, I can help walk them through all the steps to getting well. Having all these supports in one place can make a huge difference in the life of a child.

Feature Story: Illustrating How Community Schools are Smart Schools

It's often challenging trying to describe what a community school is and how a community school initiative operates. Over-simplistic explanations often do not give the uninitiated a true full-view of what community schools are and do.

That's why the Coalition for Community School recently rolled out its "Community Schools are Smart Schools" messaging platform. We believe that thriving students are vital to the success of a community. Just like a smart phone, community schools have a menu of interconnected strategies, supports, and activities that school leadership teams can easily call-up to address a student's needs - like the latest phone application - to help foster thriving and successful students.

Inside the Smart Schools phone are "apps" such as Early Childhood Education and Health and Social Support that illustrate all of those interconnected strategies and supports found in a community school. Not only does the Smart Schools messaging platform aptly depict the power of community schools, it provides a great conversation starter for interested parties to learn more about your community school.

The community school movement has evolved just as the telecommunications industry has. So we've updated our definition of community schools. The Coalition invites you to download and use these images and graphics when promoting your community school initiative to funders, public officials, and the general public. Tailor and customize the graphic to fit your initiative and the activities it provides. Community school initiatives in Grand Rapids, Kansas City, and Cincinnati have used the messaging platform to great effectiveness. Take it to your community!
