Coalition Participates in Grade Level Reading Campaign Communities Network

Earlier this month, the Annie E. Casey Foundation's Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (GLR) convened two important  events which marked the official launch of the Grade-Level Reading Communities Network.

The GLR Campaign is a collaborative effort of funders, nonprofits, states and communities across the nation devoted to dramatically increasing the number of children from low-income families reading proficiency by the end of third grade.

In just over two years, the network has grown to include 125 communities representing 8 million children in 350 school districts with the potential to impact almost 16 percent of all public school students in the U.S.

There's an obvious synergy between the goals for the GLR Campaign and the community schools strategy. IEL Director of Leadership Programs Kwesi Rollins explains the relationship.

Feature Story: Community Schools Lead the Way in Early Childhood Education

States and communities across the country are bolstering their early childhood education programs largely due to an emergence of new research on the importance of development in the first years of life. They realize, for example, that improving early learning opportunities is critical to reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

It should be no surprise then that systems of community schools and their partners are in the best position to lead the way in connecting the K-12 and early childhood fields. They are lowering chronic absenteeism rates amongst our youngest students, providing smoother transitions from pre-K to primary grades, and better aligning early education standards through the community school strategy.

As a result of the groundbreaking early childhood practices being implemented at many community schools, three more community school networks were added to the Mind in the Making-Community Schools Project that the Coalition is co-sponsoring.

Evansville, Hartford, and Providence join Multnomah County, OR, Tulsa, and Children's Aid Society-managed community schools in New York City in the Mind in the Making (MITM) and Community Schools: Crossing Boundaries and Creating Strong Linkages for Children Birth through Eight and their Families Project. The MITM-CS Project helps participating sites use Ellen Galinksy's (pictured above) groundbreaking book Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs, as a focal point for building bridges between early education systems and community schools. The project promotes educational innovation in community schools, as well as serving as a model for educators and families throughout the country.

Along with Albuquerque, NM, these sites eventually will provide early childhood tools for practitioners and blueprints for sustainable 0-8 education systems.
