Policymakers Turn to Community Schools

The year 2012 ended with important policy pushes at federal, state and local levels that positioned community schools as a key piece for education reform. With the announcements of Race to the Top District and Promise Neighborhood grantees, to new statewide legislation being pushed in New York and New Mexico, to San Pablo, Calif. successfully passing full service community school legislation through its city council and local board education, the community school strategy has surfaced in many forms. Community school leaders and their partners are leveraging their work to achieve these policy victories.

Feature Story: Community Schools Make Impact in Early Childhood Education

Community schools fundamentally transform the way traditional schools operate. As community schools work to build strong early childhood programs, the implications are clear: they are improving child outcomes and family engagement in schools.

The Coalition, through its local initiative partners, recently released two new reports detailing the impact of early childhood programs in community schools, including a report on the Early Childhood-Community School Linkages Project. The reports were released in conjunction with a symposium hosted by the New America Foundation January 14.

The Coalition and its partners have spent the past three years implementing the Linkages Project to help families with young children better prepare for elementary school.

The Linkages study uncovered a number of positive preliminary outcomes at the child, family, school building, and systemic level.

The report shows children had a greater comfort with school and increased readiness to engage in the instructional program. The students also showed significant gains in attendance and academic achievement. Parents had increased capacity and efficacy to support their children. Schools also demonstrated better coordination between educators as children transition from preschool settings to kindergarten and primary school.

Case studies on early childhood programs in community schools in Cincinnati, Evansville, Portland, and Tulsa are also available on our new online Early Childhood Education web portal. Check it out for the latest in community school ECE research and resources.
