The 5 Pillars of Transforming Schools

WEBINAR: The 5 Pillars of Transforming Schools

November 15, 2010

In the current political climate, the conversations around education are focused on turning around schools to improve student academic achievement. Our most needy students are not getting the supports and opportunities that they need to be successful in school and life. They spend most of their time in school, so how are we going to make sure that when the school is "turned around," per current guidance, that it will be able to provide students with the supports and opportunities that are so essential.

This webinar features Elaine Allensworth, Senior Director and Chief Research Officer, at the Consortium on Chicago School Research, University of Chicago provide an overview of the book. She reviews the framework for essential supports and the indicators for school improvement, as well as provide some Chicago examples.

Organizing Schools for Improvement: Lessons from Chicago
January 2010. Anthony S. Bryk, Penny Bender Sebring, Elaine Allensworth, Stuart Luppescu, John Q. Easton

This book by current and former researchers from the Consortium on Chicago School Research (CCSR) provides a detailed analysis of why students in 100 public elementary schools in Chicago were able to improve substantially in reading and math over a seven year period compared to students in another 100 schools. Using a unquie set of longitudinal data, the study yields a comprehensive set of school practices and school and community conditions that promote improvement, noting that the absence of these spells stagnation.
