Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) was awarded funds from The Wallace Foundation’s multi-year, $50 million summer learning initiative. CPS recently completed four weeks of full-day summer instruction and enrichment in June through its Fifth Quarter program, which taps community organizations to provide fine arts, technology, fitness and environmental education. Community Schools Engage the Community in School Turnaround Efforts

The Coalition for Community Schools enthusiastically supports U.S. Sec.of Ed. Arne Duncan’s plans to “require parent and community input” in the Department’s ESEA reauthorization proposal. At the NAACP Annual Convention this week, Duncan acknowledged the critical role of communities and families in making decisions about school turnaround. New Proposed Federal Legislation Lifts Work Of Community Schools!

The Coalition for Community Schools applauds Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on their introduction of the Developing Innovative Partnerships and Learning Opportunities that Motivate Achievement (DIPLOMA) Act. The legislation authorizes grants to incentivize partnerships between schools, parents, business leaders, higher education institutions, and community-based organizations in order to ensure the success of our nation’s youth. U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, announced today that DOE received approximately 339 applications for the Promise Neighborhood (PN) Planning grants. He said, "the response from neighborhoods around the country to this opportunity is tremendous. PNs bring all of the Department's strategies together—high-quality early learning programs, high-quality schools, and comprehensive supports to ensure that students in some of our most challenged communities are safe, healthy and successful."
