Partner Spotlight: March for Children and Youth Month

Partner Spotlight: March for Children & Youth Month

The Coalition would like to thank all of the community schools, students, initiatives, school districts, and community partners who participated in our March for Children & Youth Month! Thank you to our co-hosts, Afterschool Alliance, and American Federation of Teachers for joining us in helping to support students in saying, "enough is enough," with student activities to promote advocacy, and pushing social media engagement.

To start the week off strong, we released our March for Children & Youth Month Playbook and asked all participants to take part in our Twitter Storm where 187 tweets were generated within the first week! Some influencers included Texas Sen. Sylvia Garcia, Dr. Edwin Quezzada, Superintendent for Yonkers Public Schools, and Dr.  Charles Johns, Superintendent, West Chicago Elementary District 33. United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley kicked off the month celebrating Read Across America Week in one of their Community Schools and wrapped up the month announcing the first Vice President of Education, Jill Pereira. Community Schools were also the featured story in their March NewsletterUnited Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley currently operates 24 Community Schools serving 17,000 students in four school districts.

Later, we heard from José Muñoz, Director for the Coalition for Community Schools, and Dakari Taylor-Watson a Community School Site Coordinator at Brookland Elementary School for a promo to help champion the cause. On March 24, we all joined hands with youth nationally by participating in March For Our Lives, gun control march. To view pictures of our experience at this march visit our Facebook Page.  And on the last week, you all joined our Twitter Chat with our guest Tweeter Dana Donaldson, Community Schools Coordinator, at Texas American Federation of Teachers (Texas AFT) to give key insights into the strategies used to advocate for community schools and other supportive policies and programs for children and youth.
