Illinois Education Leader: We are Judging Schools Wrong

Tony Smith, the Illinois State Superintendent of Education, says that we are judging schools wrong. Policies have been created to benefit a specific group of people for years, so it’s not surprising that schools are benefiting specific students as well. Our nation is faced with a question of fairness and equity. Weis Elementary Gets More Help for Community School

The University of Central Florida has decided to give a portion of their million-dollar grant to Weis Elementary School to help transform them into a full-service community school. In previous years, the university has granted funding to other public schools in the area and seen great success, such as an 60-80% increase in graduation rates. The university continues to fund the implementation of the community schools strategy in low-income and disadvantaged neighborhoods. Read More >

In light of Independence Day, Robert Putnam’s argues in his newest book, “Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis” that opportunity is no longer equal throughout our country and much of this is to blame on education. He offers solutions such as increased extracurricular activities and implementation of community schools. He concludes that everyone’s future brightens when we treat every child like our own child. NYC announces free eyeglasses for community school students

As part of New York’s community schools initiative Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that the city will be working with eyewear company Warby Parker to provide free vision screenings and pairs of glasses to all students in the city’s 130 community schools over the next four years. Partnerships That Make a Difference: Full-Service Community Schools and Project GRAD Summer Institute

Through its Full-Service Community Schools program, the University of Tennessee aims to improve the educational outcomes of children in the Knoxville-area as well as provide service-learning opportunities for UT students. Wraparound Intervention Proves Effective in Strengthening Vulnerable Families

A study published in Families in Society: The Journal of Contemporary Social Services has found that wraparound interventions help strengthen families and reduce child maltreatment in Florida. Patricia Nellius, CEO of Brevard Family Partnership, attributes these successful outcomes to “early engagement and strong inclusive partnerships with youth and families using high fidelity Wraparound care coordination.” Read More >



The Coalition for Community Schools applauds the District of Columbia’s Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Council for their increased investment in community schools. The approved Fiscal Year 2016 budget adds $266,000 to the $1 million program. This money will support an additional community school and a study on the city’s community school initiative. Summer Meal Program Feeds Youth

The Madison County Community Schools have implemented a summer breakfast/lunch meal for families in struggling times. Many of the students rely on the free/reduced meals during the school year but are left hungry during the summer.
