Making the Difference: Research and Practice in Community Schools

Making the Difference: Research and Practice in Community Schools, a report recently released by the Coalition for Community Schools, features 20 different community school models across the country that help improve student performance by mobilizing community resources in support of student learning. By integrating existing community resources with the assets of the school, the community schools in the report produced remarkable improvements in efficiency and results.

Making the Difference brings together research from multiple disciplines that supports the 5 conditions for learning that the Coalition for Community Schools believes are necessary for all students to learn.

How do community schools "make the difference?" Community schools have the capacity to do more of what's needed to ensure young people's success. Evaluation findings from 20 community school initiatives reinforce the following benefits. Community schools:
     •  Improve student learning.
     •  Promote family engagement with students and schools.
     •  Increase effectiveness and shared responsiblity for results.
     •  Add vitality to communities.
