Coalition for Community Schools - Because Every Child Deserves Every Chance

Policymaker

If you are a policymaker (e.g. Mayors, City Councils, School Boards, Governors, State Legislators, County Boards & Executives, U.S. Senators and House Representatives) you have the authority to support a vision of learning. Community schools can be an effective strategy for creating the conditions for teaching and learning. There are important benefits in advocating for community schools at the policy level are:
  • Equitable access to both academic and social-emotional opportunities and support
  • Efficient and effective use of taxpayer dollars
  • Sustainable and scaled up systems for school improvement

Policymakers play a key role supporting federal, state and local policies that fund and implement community schools.  Policymakers also play a vital role in creating mutually beneficial relationships among other policymakers and school & community leaders.

California State Senator Carol Liu (D-La Cañada, Flintridge; and Chair of the Senate Education Committee) is an excellent  example of a policymaker advocating for community schools across the state. In October 2013, Senator Liu hosted a bus  tour called Pathways  to Partnership - Community Schools Strategies in ActionThe bus tour was a three day  statewide tour of effective cross-agency partnerships in California that are having dynamic  impacts connecting students,  parents and  schools to local resources so that families and communities thrive.

Advocate for community schools using our directory of exemplary federal, state and local policies. You can also use the Advocacy Toolkit to make the case for community schools in your community, with policymakers, families, and community based organizations.
