Evansville Pushes Community School Concepts

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) model has received attention as a national leader in school and community collaboration.
EVSC held a daylong conference Feb. 21 on the role of ‘community schools’ in providing the conditions for student learning through the collaboration of local agencies.
"It takes a community to unlock the potential that resides in every child," said Superintendent David Smith during the conference.
The strategy was picked up in Evansville during the 1990s when Principal Cathy Gray gathered a school-based council to discuss improving student outcomes by addressing student needs such as hunger and dental care. Over the years, the strategy spread to all EVSC sites.
"People from all over the U.S. want to know how we do it here, which is really exciting to hear," Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said.
