Ed Week Blog Picks Up Story from Coalition Newsletter

Summer Learning loss is proving to have a negative impact on student achievement – especially with our most vulnerable youth. In their April Newsletter, the Coalition for Community Schools highlighted how the Cincinnati Community Learning Centers (aka Community Schools) are solving this problem with their 5th quarter Summer Learning program. This story was picked up by blogger Nora Fleming, and published in Ed Week! Cincinnati public schools' Fifth Quarter summer extended-learning program is turning summer into a season of enrichment for their 3rd consecutive year for more than 1,350 Cincinnati at-risk students. Since the community was already organized to support CPS schools and their students through Community Learning Centers, community partners were prepared to answer the students’ needs. They immediately began working with selected schools and the district to collaboratively plan new summer learning opportunities using new and existing resources. The Fifth Quarter demonstrates the power of partnerships to respond to a school system’s needs, in this case, moving Cincinnati students beyond the traditional school year to help them succeed.
