Community School in Northeast Pennsylvania Sees Huge Turnaround

05/25/12

Central Elementary School in Allentown, PA is looking a lot differently these days, according to a May edition of Education Daily.

The grade 1-5 school was featured in the publication for the gains in test scores, parental involvement, and attendance the school has seen since it adopted a whole-child approach utilizing community partners.  The United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley has been working with Allentown School District in creating strong community schools. Central Elementary School was one of the earliest community schools in Allentown. It was also perennially the lowest performing school in the district. Heroically, suspensions have dropped by 50 percent, it made AYP for 2010-2011, and parents play an active role in the school.
