Coming Together

Coming Together

Dear Friends,

"We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people." – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Coalition for Community Schools raise our voice to decry the horrendous violence that our country has experienced in Baton Rouge, St. Paul and Dallas in recent days. We send our heartfelt prayers to the families, friends and colleagues of those who have been killed or wounded, and we pray too that the healing can begin for the communities most deeply affected.

But prayers and heartfelt messages are not enough! We know that the events of the past days, years, and yes, decades, pose deep challenges to every community, every state and to our entire society. Every individual, organization and institution must ask what they can do in the coming days to build a more equitable and just society.

At its most powerful, community schools provide a pathway for genuine relationship-building and joint action. As a Coalition with many partners, local initiatives, schools and friends, we must intensify our efforts to bring people together, to listen to the voices of everyone, particularly the most disaffected, and to have courageous conversations about what we can do together to nurture our young people through these trying times and into a more hopeful and positive future.

Please use #BetterTogether on Twitter or Facebook to share how you and your community are feeling about these tragic events, and how your community schools are responding. We will highlight these efforts in the weeks and months ahead. And for immediate assistance on racial equity curricula and more, please visit our friends Racial Equity Tools.

In Peace,
