Broughal Middle School’s After-School Programs Thriving

02/01/12

A year and a half ago, Broughal Middle School converted into a Community School – thefourth such school in the Bethlehem Area School District.

Through partnerships with United Way, Lehigh University and Just Born Inc., students are now offered a variety of after-school activities. After-school sport and art clubs, as well as tutoring, create an entertaining and supportive school environment for students, students and parents said. In the school greenhouse, students with a green thumb learn how to cultivate plants for their South Side neighborhood’s community gardens.

These enrichment activities also raise students’ awareness of career possibilities, officials said.
"Getting students excited about the environment in middle school can foster a passion that drives college studies" said George White, director of Lehigh University’s Center for Developing Urban Educational Leaders.

Broughal’s new community school format has also gotten parents involved.  A mother who used to volunteer in the school, Rosie Perez, was hired to support the Broughal Community School Coordinator, Alicia Crezzo.
