National Awards for Excellence

Community Schools  National Awards for Excellence 2011  Applications now available!


Purpose:

To highlight the effectiveness and efficiency of community schools, the Coalition for Community Schools has established a national awards program.

Individual Community Schools that have been operating for at least 3 years, are public schools, and have demonstrated success.
Three individual schools will be recognized. Each winning school will receive $1,000.

SCREENING CRITERIA – ARE YOU A COMMUNITY SCHOOL?
The Coalition encourages nominations from any community school that meets the selection criteria outlined below. (*Note: past award winners may not apply again). While schools doing this work may not call themselves a community school (terms such as community learning centers, full service community schools are often used) they must at least meet the criteria below.

• A coordination mechanism, ideally a full-time site coordinator is in place.
• A site-based leadership team that includes many of the following stakeholders: the principal, the site coordinator, educators, families, residents, and community partners guides the work of the community school.
• Partnerships are in place with at least one of the following: community organizations, government agencies, institutions of higher education, faith-based organizations, or parent/family groups.
• A results based strategy that organizes the work of the school and partners toward achieving results to improve results for children, youth, and families is in place.

Community School Initiatives
: Joint efforts of schools and others stakeholders (e.g., local government, United Ways, foundations, higher education institutions and nonprofit community-based organizations) that have organized multiple community school sites with demonstrable results, and have demonstrated a strong commitment to going to scale with community schools across the community or school system.
Up to two initiatives will be recognized. Each winning initiative will receive $2,500.


SCREENING CRITERIA – ARE YOU A COMMUNITY SCHOOL INITIATIVE?
The Coalition encourages nominations from any community school initiative that meets the selection criteria outlined below. (*Note: past award winners may not apply again). While schools doing this work may not call themselves a community school (terms such as community learning centers, full service community schools are often used) they must at least meet the criteria below.

• Community schools as described in the screening criteria above are in place.
• A community leadership team provides the leadership, vision, and overall strategy for the initiative.
• An intermediary organization (e.g., a CBO, institution of higher education, United Way, consortium of organizations, local education fund, local government, school district, etc.) coordinates and manages the initiative.
• A results based strategy that organizes the work of the school and partners toward achieving results to improve results for children, youth, and families is in place.
