Celebrating our 2013 Community Schools
National Awards for Excellence Winners!
Coalition for Community Schools honored five high-performing community schools and initiatives with the 2013 Community Schools National Awards for Excellence during the Community Schools Education Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. This year’s awardees represented the great work community school initiatives and schools are doing across the country – and they exemplify a core belief of the Coalition: that schools and communities are inextricably connected and must work closely together for the benefit of very child.

The Policy Briefing held on June 6th, kicked off the Community Schools Education Day. Representative Judy Chu (California)
and Congressman Steven Chabot
(Ohio) spoke at the event, supporting the DIPLOMA Act
and Cincinnati’s success respectively.
National partners highlighted the importance of community schools and introduced the work of our exemplar winners, including:
- Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers
- Gail Connelly, Executive Director, National Association of Elementary School Principals
- Karen Key, Vice President for Programs, National Human Services Assembly
- Kevin McCartney, Senior Vice President, Government Relations, Boys and Girls Club
- Tom Gentzel, Executive Director, National School Boards Association
- Clifford Johnson, Executive Director, and Audrey Hutchinson, Program Director, Institute for Youth, Education and Families, National League of Cities
Following the Policy Briefing, community school advocates met with 38 legislator's office (e.g., Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Rob Portman (R- Ohio), etc.) to discuss their work and impact, significantly raising awareness among legislators and Hill staff about the value of community schools in their districts and states. We hope you will continue to advocate for community schools in your own communities and to policymakers. To learn more about these policies, visit our Community Schools Education Day page.
