Creating an environment in which all children can learn at high levels is a challenge for all schools — a challenge that community schools are designed to meet. Community schools do this by creating the five conditions for learning that the Coalition believes are essential for every child to succeed.

• Condition #1: The school has a core instructional program with qualified teachers, a challenging curriculum, and high standards and expectations for students.
• Condition #2: Students are motivated and engaged in learning — both in school and in community settings, during and after school.
• Condition #3: The basic physical, mental and emotional health needs of young people and their families are recognized and addressed.
• Condition #4: There is mutual respect and effective collaboration among parents, families and school staff.
• Condition #5: Community engagement, together with school efforts, promotes a school climate that is safe, supportive and respectful and that connects students to a broader learning community.

The 2006 National Forum of the Coalition for Community Schools will highlight how community schools initiatives are creating these conditions through changes in leadership, policy, systems and practice changes.

The goals of the Forum are to help participants:

• Apply the conditions for learning as a tool for mobilizing institutional and community support.
• Learn how to mobilize local leadership to create and sustain community schools system-wide.
• Strengthen practice with students and families.
• Increase the capacity of advocates to strategically promote the community school vision during NCLB reauthorization.
• Highlight the importance of youth participation and engagement in community schools.

The conference will bring together a diverse group of leaders from the fields of education, youth development, health and human services, family support, neighborhood and community development, government, philanthropy and others who work at the local, state and national levels. Bring your experience, expertise and enthusiasm to our fifth National Forum!
