Illinois - first state to codify community schools in state school code!
HB 684 amends the Illinois School Code to establish community schools as a legitimate and standardized innovative strategy for Illinois schools to implement and seek funds, when available, to address student academic success as well as parental and community engagement at the school. Coordinated Systems of Care Save Schools Millions
Children and youth with mental health issues thrive at school when they are enrolled in coordinated systems of care, according to a new federal report. It was found that youth with mental health problems, in system-of-care programs, experienced academic improvements within 12 months of enrollment.

Deadlines Announced for Race to the Top Funds
The Race to the Top Fund will support states’ effort to drive substantial gains in student achievement. In late July– ED will publish a notice of proposed rulemaking in the Federal Register, inviting public comment for 30 days on the proposed grant application and the criteria for evaluating them. The notice for  applications will go out in October.  Read more...

Parsing the Achievement Gap II
This Policy Information Report follows up on a 2003 report Parsing the Achievement Gap: Baselines for Tracking Progress. The updated report identifies 16 factors related to academic performance ranging from birth weight and hunger to lead poisoning, parental involvement, and teacher quality. The report concludes that while a few of the gaps in achievement have narrowed, overall, there has not been much progress.
