As more communities embrace the vision of a scaled-up system of community schools, one of the most vital leadership positions in laying out those plans and goals come from the guidance of the school district's chief - the superintendent.
This can seem to be a daunting task given the political climate. But many superintendents are coming to see the community schools strategy as a way to provide the resources and support they know their students, families, and teachers need to succeed.
Dr. Cathy Burden in Tulsa, Okla., Dr. Tony Smith in Oakland, Calif., and Dr. Jesse Register in Nashville have all used their influence to ramp up community and school partnerships.
They know the benefits of partnering with representatives from government, nonprofit organizations, unions, philanthropies, businesses, faith-based organizations, and more. Together, they share repsonsibility for vision, support, financing, and outcomes for children and families. These superintendents are utilizing all their communities' resources to support student learning.
